When Does Christmas Music Start?

Most US radio stations start playing Christmas music between November 1 and mid November, with a few flipping the switch as early as late October. Streaming has no such rules, so you can start whenever the mood strikes.

When Radio Stations Switch to Christmas Music

The classic pattern is the post-Halloween flip. Once October 31 passes, a wave of stations across the US drops their format and goes all-Christmas, all-day. Many make a public event of the exact moment, because being the first station playing carols is a reliable way to win November listeners.

Not every station moves at once. Some wait until mid November, and a smaller number hold out until the day after Thanksgiving, the more traditional start of the holiday stretch. By the last week of November, though, nearly all of them have made the switch.

When Should You Start Playing Christmas Music?

This is the great annual argument, and there is no wrong answer. One camp says the second Halloween is over, the season is open. The other insists nothing starts until the Thanksgiving leftovers are packed away. Both are right, because it is your December and your speakers.

If you want a rule of thumb: early November for the upbeat, celebratory stuff, and save the calm, relaxing playlists for the quieter weeks closer to the day, when the season actually starts to feel restful.
